University of Mumbai intraduce Correspondence Courses in the year 1971-72. The Directorate of Correspondence Courses was up-graded as 'Directorate of Distance Education', in the year 1985. In the year 1993 The Directorate of Distance Education has been hereby designated as the Institute of Distance Education with immediate effect.
All Programmes offered by IDOL is approved by Distance Education Council, New Delhi.

Mumbai University Distance Education Courses Admission & Eligibility Criteria:-
For BA, B.com:- Pass in 10 + 2 or equivalent examinations.
For M.Com:- Student must have passed the Bachelor's Degree examination only B.Com/B.M.S./B.M.M. of this university OR equivalent degree in any faculty from other university. *B.M.M. degree examination (Only for the management specialization subjects at the M.Com degree levels)
For MA:- Student must have passed the Bachelor's Degree examination in any faculty of this university OR equivalent degree in any faculty from other university.
For PGDFM:- A Candidate for being eligible for admission to the PG Diploma Course in Financial Management and PG Diploma Course in Operations Research for Management must hold a university degree in faculty with two years work experience in any organization, or must have recoganized professional qualifications and at least five years professional experience. Notwithstanding anything mentioned above the Defence Services personnel may be admitted to the course even if they are not degree holders.
For PGDORM:- A candidate for being eligible for admission to the P.G.Diploma in Operations Research for Management must hold a University bachelor degree of this University or any other University in any faculty with two years work experience in any organization or must have recognized professional qualification and at least five years professional experience.
For B.Sc Computer Science / Information Technology:- Min. Qualification: HSC (XII) Science with Mathematics or Equivalent.
For M.Sc Computer Science , Information Technology:- Graduate in B.Sc.. with Statistics or Physics or Mathematics or B.Sc. Compo SC. or B.,SC. IT. or equivalent of a Statutory University.
For MCA:- Minimum Qualification: Graduate in any faculty of a statutory University with minimum 45% marks (minimum 40% for reserved category) and Mathematics at XII or higher level. There will be an Entrance test for the admission in MCA course.
Entrance Test: Provisional selection for the Entrance Test will be made through Institute of Distance and Open Learning, University of Mumbai.
