Course Overview
The aim of the advertising joint degree is to prepare you for a career in advertising, equipping you with the practical skills required to make an immediate impact and the conceptual framework to make a long-term difference.
Advertising is an attractive and vibrant sector combining an understanding of fundamental marketing techniques with creative execution. The advertising pathway allows you to apply a broad understanding of advertising theory to a range of practical advertising activities and develop key transferable skills to enhance employability.
The Economics pathway is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles of economics and their application in problem solving for a wide variety of business, social and political issues, together with the development of key personal transferable skills.
Economics is a necessary discipline to understand business strategy, behaviour and performance. The study of economics provides a strong intellectual and practical background which is fundamental in understanding and efficiently resolving any issue which involves decision on the allocation of scarce resources or the improvement of the well being of an individual or a society.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of five GCSE's at grade C or above including Mathematics and English Language or equivalent qualification, plus one of the following:
* A minimum tariff score of 260 points made up of a minimum of two passes A2 Level, two 6 unit or one 12 unit AVCE. Remaining points can be made up from AS qualifications.
* Applications are welcomed from those with international qualifications (equivalent to those above) such as International Baccalaureate 24 points, including internationally accredited Foundation courses. You must also have an English Language qualification such as IELTS (minimum score of 6.0) or TOEFL (minimum score 550).
* Satisfactory completion of a full-time foundation course of an appropriate type.
* The programme welcomes applications from mature students.
Course Content
Assessment
You will be exposed to a wide variety of innovative assessment styles, including business reports, academic papers, case studies, individual and group presentations, portfolios and projects, as well as conventional examinations.
Further Study
You may progress onto postgraduate study on the University's MSc and MBA programmes or complete professional examinations in management or marketing.
Employability
Students taking the Advertising pathway can pursue careers either within a client organization, creative agency or in the media sector. This pathway seeks to engender a genuine creative orientation, allowing a credible transition onto the exciting environment of the creative sector.
Studying the Economics pathway provides an excellent foundation for a career as an economist but graduates with economics training also have skills which employers highly value in business management, commerce, the professions, the public sector and voluntary organizations. This is because in addition to intellectual skills in economics you develop a valuable broad range of skills that last for life.
