University Description
VMK is a highly-regarded state institution under the Danish Ministry of Culture. The main object is to educate organists, musicians, singers and music teachers in the fields of classical and rhythmic music. However, this this does not prevent the academy from allotting considerable resources to research and development, to the advantage of the students and of the world of music as such.
The basic purpose behind all activitiies at VMK is music, and the Academy offers the best facilities imaginable for students and lecturers alike; computer facilities, an advanced sound studio, a concert organ, the café environment and the large concert hall with its unique acoustics, etc.
The building
VMK - Academy of Music and Music Communication is situated in Denmark's ffifth largest city with approximately 80,000 inhabitants; the academy is housed in beautiful old buildings and takes a very active part in the city's rich cultural life.
Esbjerg's first electricity station, built in 1907, has been transformed into a modern, fully functional music academy. Architecturally speaking, it is a shining example of the successful transformation of an old building. The restoration work has been carried out with dignity and respect, and there has been deliberate play on the contrast between rough and finished materials. Thus, modern glass and steel constructions rise to challenge the railway sleepers and massive cranes of a bygone era. The addition of one and a half floors to the teaching wing, an advanced ventilation plant, inserted floors in connection with the library, working with sound and insulation - these were but some of the challenges that faced the architect and the craftsmen as the work progressed.
The old machine hall of the generating station, where the original lacunar ceiling has been preserved, has today been transformed into one of the best concert halls in Denmark.
