The Chinese philosopher Laotse once said “Learning is like rowing upstream. If you stop, you get pushed backwards”. It is an appropriate saying for several reasons: as a description of the permanent changing and developmental process of our young university which you can follow in the latest edition of the Jacobs magazine, as advice for every single student, and as assistance for our successful graduates. On 3 June 2008, the Jacobs University Bremen celebrated the successful graduation of its fifth wave of students, the “Class of 2008”. The 333 young alumni - 186 Bachelors, 93 Masters and 54 PhD graduates - from 58 countries once again impressed with an outstanding national success rate of over 95% for Bachelors and Masters, with an average age of 22 years for Bachelors and 25 for Masters.

Prince Wosfan Asserate, our speaker of Ethiopian origin and German education, called for the new graduates to put the specialized knowledge learned at Jacobs University, as well as their intercultural skills, into practice, with the courage to take responsibility. He focused his speech on the dialogue of cultures as being the great challenge and yet also the great opportunity of the modern, globalized world, thus resonating with the very spirit which characterises Jacobs University. The fact that this dialogue can only be profitable with extensive education and diverse knowledge, and that future decision-makers must have a deep understanding of science and its methods, was the common thread of the various speeches at the graduation ceremony.

We are pleased to be able to welcome almost 240 new Bachelor students to the campus in September, and to be able to continue growing with the construction of College IV. This growth will not only be quantitative, but also accompanied by simultaneous qualitative strengthening and reputation enhancement. Whatever applies for the necessity of intercultural dialogue, applies similarly for the dialogue of scientific disciplines. Research focus areas, which gain their significance through the interdisciplinary co-operation of our researchers, will also influence our teaching services. This affects post-graduate study as much as the Bachelor courses, because it will be a mix of specialized knowledge, general skills and intercultural experience which will not only make our university attractive for students from all over the world, but also successful among rival universities worldwide.
