University Description
MF Norwegian School of Theology was founded as an independent theological school in 1907 by pastors and lay people in the Lutheran Church of Norway. They wanted a commitment to the authority of the Holy Scriptures, and the Lutheran Confessions, to be the basis for pastoral ministry and theological education. Growing recognition and theological scholarship has been accompanied by growth in the student body, and MF has for many years been by far the largest theological institution in Norway. It has trained about 70 % of the clergy of the Church of Norway, as well as teachers, catechists, missionaries and other workers in church and society. MF is situated at Majorstuen, an urban center outside the Oslo downtown area and very close to the University of Oslo. The building has several auditoriums and smaller classrooms, offices for approximately 80 faculty and staff members, a library with more than 60 000 volumes, a chapel and a large cafeteria.
MF has from the beginning had a double commitment: to academic excellence and to Christian identity.
The school wants to found its identity in the Church and to serve the Church. At the same time, it is academically and ecumenically open. It welcomes students from all denominations. The school has also increasingly become an international school with a global focus, both in terms of its student body and its programs and curriculum.
MF sees a close relationship in today's world between a ministry in and to the local church and a commitment to global Christianity.
