University Description

The University of the Netherlands Antilles (UNA) was formed by a national decree dated 12 January 1979 (O.B. 1979 no. 12). A number of developments that occurred in rapid succession after 1970 were very important for this formation.

    *      The Law College of the Netherlands Antilles, where students were trained to take the LL B Antillean Law exam, was established by a national decree dated October 6, 1970 (O.B. 1970 no. 1130)
    *      A degree program Business Administration was started at this College of Law in 1973 after which a name change to College of the Netherlands Antilles followed in 1974 (O.B. 1974 no. 118). This transformation meant that the possibility was opened to follow a full degree program in law in the Netherlands Antilles that could lead to a Master’s exam and also a degree program in Business Administration, leading led to a Bachelor’s
    *      The Department of Business Administration was changed into the Department of Business Administration and Public Administration in 1977, after which students could also obtain a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration
    *      Finally, with the foundation of the UNA in 1979, the Antillean College of Technology, which had been established in 1972, was transformed into the Faculty of Engineering, offering students an education to the level of bachelor

Currently the UNA has four faculties
a     The Faculty of Arts, which offers a Second-Degree Teacher Training program Papiamento, Dutch and English
b     The Faculty of Law, preparing students for the Master’s exam in Antillean law
c     The School of Business, which offers the degree programs Business Administration and Accounting and prepares students for Bachelor's and Master's exams
d     The Faculty of Engineering, which offers the degree programs Architecture and Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Information Engineering and Electrical Systems

Goals
The UNA strives with all its faculties to achieve its legally defined goals that oblige it to provide higher education to:
a
prepare individuals for posts in society, requiring or benefitting from a higher education
b
provide insight into the relations between the sciences as well as advancing a sense of societal responsibility

Aside from education and research the UNA attempts to achieve these goals by:
a     Creating possibilities for research and practical work for students
b     Regularly organizing lectures about societal and scientific issues
c     Providing or having third parties provide courses for those, who wish to improve themselves by attending higher education

The UNA's mission
“To contribute to the social, economic and intellectual development of the Caribbean society through higher education, research and community service. We consider societal involvement and quality as key values. Our graduates have the potential to become future leaders of the Caribbean.” (Strategic Plan UNA 2006 - 2010).

The common convictions of the UNA
1    We believe that ethical behavior is essential for leadership in an ever changing world
2    We believe that multilingualism is essential for the development of human potential in a globalizing society
3    We believe that it is the duty of the UNA to contribute to the sustainable development of the Netherlands Antilles and the Caribbean region
4    We believe that forming strategic alliances is essential in striving for excellence and international recognition
5    We believe that flexibility is the basis for a dynamic learning community
6    We believe that it is essential to focus on the needs of the client

The UNA’s quality control process

Structural monitoring and improving the quality of the courses in higher education is a recent worldwide phenomenon. The United States and England lead the way in this development. One of the results hereof is a worldwide improvement of the quality of education.
The UNA has decided to follow these developments closely and to internalize the results thereof in a responsible manner. With this in mind the UNA has recently started its own internal quality control process, with the aspiration to introduce and implement a system of internal quality control in all its programs. The UNA aims at having all programs achieve an internationally recognized hallmark of quality or accreditation by 2010.

The quality requirements set by the Dutch–Flemish accreditation organization (NVAO) form the basis for the quality control system within the UNA, as the programs will be accredited by the NVAO. The programs take about 3.5 years to complete the quality control or accreditation process. This process will require extreme effort from all involved, at management, faculty, program, and departmental levels.

The accreditation process

Consisting of self-evaluation, improvement path, visitation and final accreditation, was preceded in the UNA at the end of 2003 by a Zero Measurement Study in order to take stock early of the current quality of the programs. The intention is to implement the most import points of improvements in the short term. Furthermore, self-evaluation has taken place in the course of 2005, based on self-reflection and a critical analysis.

A quality control newsletter Kz-Nieuws (in Dutch) appears regularly, with information about quality control and accreditation. It deals with various current topics that not only concern the quality control process in the University of the Netherlands Antilles but also explains a specific quality theme.
