University Description
Trinity College Dublin is the only constituent college of the University of Dublin and the two names are interchangeable for all practical purposes. Founded in 1592 on the model of Oxford and Cambridge colleges, Trinity occupies an unrivalled position on a 45-acre site right in the heart of the city. Trinity College has much to offer: a beautiful campus in the heart of Dublin, an impressive academic record spanning over 400 years, a highly regarded international Faculty and research community and a student population comprising students from over 90 countries. It is a College where history continues to be made, theories tested and life lived!
Location
Trinity College Dublin is located in the heart of the capital of Ireland. Dublin is the capital of Ireland and the largest city with a population of over one million. Founded as a Viking settlement in the 10th century, Dublin today is well known for its public gardens and parks, for its Georgian architecture, its art galleries, museums, theatres and impromptu pub sessions of music and dancing - in short for the richness and variety of its physical and cultural environment. Dublin is a great city in which to live. Dublin's reputation as one of Europe's leading cities for tourism and entertainment ensures that students enjoy a wonderful social life while studying at Trinity. A particular feature of Dublin life is the tradition of live music in every conceivable venue, from street busking to the National Concert Hall.
Research
The vigour of any university must be judged by its commitment to research. In the early 21st century, this often takes the form of partnership with major international companies or inter-institutional cooperation within the framework of programmes of the European Union, and in both Trinity College is in a leading position in Ireland. Trinity College's research strategy encompasses all major academic disciplines, and is committed to world-class research activities in key areas across science, engineering, social sciences, medicine and the arts. Trinity College's strategic focus is on five key areas: European & International Integration, Culture & Creative Arts, Materials & Intelligent Systems, Biosciences & Translational Research and Transport, Energy & Environment. In each of these areas Trinity has significant research activities, linked nationally and internationally, building on a cornerstone of interdisciplinary to deliver research of global consequence.
Library
The university library is one of the largest in Europe, with a book stock of over 4.25 million volumes and extensive collections of manuscripts, maps and music, having been built up since the end of the sixteenth century. As a Legal Deposit library, it enjoys the privilege of receiving all Irish and UK publications, a right it has had since 1801.The library is of crucial importance to research, as a result of its richness of its print and manuscript resources and its comprehensive access to electronic information.
