Acting - BA (Hons)
The BA (Hons) Acting degree is a very intense course.  During your first year you will feel there are lots of new and different things being thrown at you from all directions.  Some things might seem hard to understand, especially as a lot of it may be very new to you.  At some point in your first year you might feel like you have hit a brick wall, that you can't act at all, that you are useless and can't do anything.  Everyone else will appear to be brilliant, with loads more experience and talent than you feel you have.  This is perfectly natural and just part of the process.  In fact, it's a good thing, because it's a sign that you are developing as an actor.  Try not to worry, because the person you think is so great is probably feeling just the same as you.

There are people at college from all kinds of backgrounds, and with all levels of experience, and you can feel very inferior at times.  However, you  will find a way through.  Be patient and be positive.  You will learn from other students as much as from your tutors.  Some classes are specially designed for you to watch each others work: you can often see in other people the problems you can't see in yourself.  If you persevere and have faith in what you're doing, things will begin to come clear for you.   It you gain a place on the course, remember that it's because you are talented and we want to help you to release your talent to its fullest potential.

When you get to the second year you will be able to look back and see where all the connections are and why you are doing certain things.  Although tutors will always explain why you are doing something, and will draw the connections for you, it is often only when you have been through an experience and can look at it with some hindsight that you truly understand for yourself.

Remember it's all acting - Shakespeare, Restoration, Nineteenth Century, Modern, Contemporary - don't be afraid of the work you are not familiar with.  You're learning the skills to cope with anything the professional world may put your way, and you will gradually see how you can adapt your core skills to embrace any style of acting.

You may find you are suprised at how much effort and work you have to put into becoming an actor.  Now you want to be a professional, everything changes.  It's fun, but it's not a game: you expect people to pay you in the end, and nobody will pay a plumber for half fixing a leak - so they won't pay for you for half knowing your lines.  While you have lines to learn, or work to do between classes, you do not have any spare time.   Entry Requirements

Business MPhil & PhD Research Degrees
  Entry Requirements

Applicants for an MPhil need to have the necessary foundation knowledge to pursue the particular specialist issue they have chosen. This is most often a first or second-class honours degree in the relevant business area, but students may have the equivalent knowledge because of their practical work experience.

Applicants for a PhD will usually need to have an MA, MSc or MPhil degree that has given them the specialist knowledge of the major academic literature, theories and frameworks and awareness of current business practice to enable them to challenge conventional wisdom in their proposed field of study. They also need to have experience of research methods and design.

In addition, international applicants must satisfy the university's proficiency in English Language requirements, for example, IELTS Grade 6.0 in all bands or 6.5 average; TOEFL at least 575. Course Overview

MPhil degrees provide an opportunity to consider the professional and academic literature, theories and frameworks associated with an issue related to business practice. This enables comment to be made upon shortcomings in theories, and practice to be improved. By the end of the programme students will have written a thesis of around 40,000 words. Students will be orally examined on their work by two or more examiners.

It is often possible to transfer to a PhD at a suitable stage in the work. If you voice the intention of progressing from an MPhil to a PhD, a viva voce examination will be held and a University Research Degrees Committee will assess a report summarising your findings to date and your proposed plan of work for a PhD.

PhD degrees extend Masters level study by making a significant contribution to academic understanding of a particular issue. The thesis explores current theories and frameworks and demonstrates how insights from empirical study or reasoning warrant a fundamental reconceptualisation. By the end of the programme students will have written a thesis of around 80,000 words. Students will be orally examined on their work by two or more examiners.

  Course Content

From day one you will be learning the essential skills of a news reporter: how to find stories, interview and write for different readers and audiences. This is very much a hands-on course – you'll be writing stories weekly, working to real deadlines and beginning to make useful contacts, as you produce news for a printed newspaper, live website, and live TV and radio news programmes.

In addition to your core journalism modules, you will have the chance to develop related skills in other media of your choice, including audio and video editing, print and web design and digital photography.

In years two and three you are introduced to writing features, reviews and columns, and designing newspapers and magazines, while broadcast journalism and online journalism are explored in more depth. It is not just the increased complexity of legal practice that may make you choose to complete an LLM, you may want to strengthen your core skills – writing and research, to be a better lawyer. you may be considering a LLM to jump start your career, change employer, change the field in which you work, earn more money or to move into teaching law.

There is no set time to do an LLM, some people do so immediately after completing their first law degree, whereas others wait until they have been in practice for many years.
