University of Peradeniya was established in 1942. Today, the University consists of eight academic faculties. About 1800 undergraduates enter the University annually, to make up an undergraduate student population of 6600, while the total number of postgraduate students registered is over 1200. The University of Peradeniya is located only 8 km from the city of Kandy. The access to the University premises is through Galaha Road, from the turn off near the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya a popular tourist attraction famous for its rare tropical plants and orchids. Peradeniya is 110 km from Colombo, the current capital of Sri Lanka, and can be reached within three to four hours by road or by railway. The nearest railway station is Sarasavi Uyana, which is located on the campus. There is s frequent bus service between Kandy and Mahakanda via the Campus. The University is situated east and south of Peradeniya town where the Colombo-Kandy highway crosses the Mahaweli and on the east it spreads part of the way up the Hantana ranges. The Mahaweli Ganga flows across the campus in a northerly direction enhancing the natural beauty of the University site. The University covers about 700 hectares of land located on the flood plain of the Mahaweli river and the lower slopes of the Hantana range. University of Peradeniya has 8 undergraduate faculties :- Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences , Arts, Dental. Engineering, Medical, Science, Vet. Medicine & 5 postgraduate faculties:- Arts, Agriculture, Engineering, Science, Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science.
