I would like to welcome you on behalf of the whole University Community to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), an institution that believes strongly in and promotes scientific progress, human exchanges and on-going collaboration in its endeavour to offer all its members an integral education.
The staff of our teaching, administrative and service departments will offer you the tools you need to ensure that your learning process and integral education are of the highest possible quality, thanks to their professionalism, attention to detail and their commitment to the highest standards. The detailed knowledge of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that we present to you here, the location of its various campuses, installations and services, as well as all the cultural and sports opportunities it has to offer, will help you to achieve your education goals.
I would like to use this opportunity to expressly state my personal commitment, together with that of all the people who work at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to building an institution that bases its ongoing improvements on the need for quality and innovation, always viewed from an interdisciplinary, international perspective.
The ULPGC is located on the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). It was set up in May 1989 by the University Reorganization Law passed by the Canary Islands’ Parliament, which united the Canary Islands Polytechnic University (initially, in 1979, the Polytechnic University of Las Palmas), and other university centres on Gran Canaria, some of which dated back to the 19th century. It is, therefore, an institution that brings together a modern approach and many decades of experience.
The ULPGC offers a wide range of qualifications in all the major fields of learning. In 2008-2009, it offers: 54 undergraduate degrees, five of which are also offered on-line on the e-learning platform (Campus Virtual), 1 ULPGC degree course, 5 official postgraduate courses, 17 on-site post-graduate programmes, a further 27 on-line postgraduate programmes, 57 doctorate programmes and specific training programmes for senior citizens. Students at the ULPGC receive support for their on- site classes on the e-training platform and may also take booster courses in those subjects that tend to pose most problems during their first year.
There are more than 1,500 lecturers at the ULPGC carrying out important research work under the auspices of the University’s 161 research groups, some of which are leaders in their field at an international level. There are also 4 research centres and 4 University Research Institutes. The ULPGC currently leads 286 research projects.
The ULPGC offers the university community a wide range of cultural and sports activities to complement academic learning, promoting values such as solidarity, social justice, gender equality, and respect for diversity and the environment among members of the community.
The ULPGC is endowed with libraries, reading and study rooms and computer labs, providing students with the support they need to get the most out of the teaching they receive. This support can be found in books, journals and other print material, as well as new technology formats. Some of the reading rooms at the University Library are open 24 hours a day, and the students can also consult sources at the library, take books out on loan, make photocopies, access teledocumentation and request the purchase of material. Laptops are also available.
The ULPGC’s sports service manages a number of different indoor and outdoor facilities for the following sports, among others: handball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor football, athletics, rugby, football, squash, weightlifting, wrestling, sports gymnastics and aerobics. It also offers a programme of outdoor activities such as rambling, orienteering, canoeing, multi-adventure, mountain-bike, diving, parachuting, hang-gliding and bungey-jumpin.
You can find all this in a modern institution, where you can register on-line, and which offers students not only academic training, but also complementary activities.
