The University of the Free State is situated in the heart of the central region of South Africa. The UFS, a multicultural, parallel-medium (English and Afrikaans) institution, was established in Bloemfontein, capital of the Free State Province, in 1904.

On the main campus in Bloemfontein, our students number close to 16 000, while almost 3 000 use other means of study such as the Internet and distance education. The Qwaqwa Campus in the Eastern Free State, which was incorporated in January 2003, has approximately 1 500 students.

Our six faculties offer a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The University is  an important centre for research and has close ties with a number of  universities on the continent as well as around the world.

The UFS is recognised as a leader in the transformation process in South African higher education - a view endorsed by former President Nelson Mandela, who has lauded our University for its transformation and language policies.

The long-held dream of an institution of higher education in the Free State became a reality on 28 January 1904.

When the Grey College School in Bloemfontein opened its doors for the new school term, matriculants could, for the first time in the history of the institution, register for a full BA degree course. The first six students attended lectures in a tiny two-roomed building. This building was later reconstructed on the present-day UFS campus and has been declared a national monument.

The first two graduates in 1905 were SEH Grosskopf, who went on to become a missionary and cleric, and JZ van Schalkwijk. Others who studied at UFS were EB Grosskopf (author), Dr WFC Arndt (Mathematics professor), SH Pellisier (Director of Education), Dr NJ van der Merwe (cleric and cabinet minister), Sir Pierre van Ryneveld (the first person to fly from London to Cape Town accompanied by only one person), and Dr Colin Steyn (politician and cabinet minister).

In 1906 the institution became known as the Grey University College (GUC), but shortly thereafter, the school and college finally parted ways. By the following year, the student body had grown to 29, and the number of lecturers to 10. In 1910, the Parliament of the Orange River Colony passed legislation declaring the GUC an official educational institution in the fields of the Arts and Sciences.

Growth in those days was slow. While bilingual, the main thrust at the GUC was towards English, which did not satisfy the needs of the predominantly Afrikaans-speaking population in the Free State. Lectures were, for the most part, offered in English.

Ironically, in 1918, Prof DF Malherbe became the first Afrikaans professor in the country (well, the world) at the GUC.

To cement ties with its home province, the name was changed to the University College of the Orange Free State. In the late forties, Afrikaans became the official language of instruction at the university.

On 18 March 1950, Parliament declared Kovsies a fully fledged, independent university. Simultaneously, the name was changed to the University of the Orange Free State (UOFS), and former state president CR Swart was appointed the first chancellor.

The faculties of Education, Law and Social Sciences were established in 1945, while the Economics and Administrative Sciences Faculty came into being in 1954. The addition of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1958 was an important step forward.

During the sixties, seventies and eighties, the university thrived. Residences and other buildings mushroomed, remaining today as distinctive landmarks - for example the Callie Human Centre and the Odeion. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1969 and the Faculty of Theology in 1980. Since 1993, the UFS has been a parallel-medium institution, offering lectures in six faculties in both English and Afrikaans. These faculties are Economic and Management Sciences (incorporating the School of Management), Health Sciences (consisting of the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the School of Allied Health Professions), Humanities (incorporating the School of Education), Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences and Theology.

Subsequent to the adoption in 1999 of a new university statute, the UFS entered a significant growth period, today boasting more students than ever before in its history.

In February 2001, the university lived through yet another name change, when it became the University of the Free State. The new name was adopted to reflect the real character of the university and its environment.

The Qwaqwa Campus, which was formerly a campus of the University of the North in Polokwane, was incorporated into the UFS on 1 January 2003 as part of the restructuring of higher education by the Minister of Education.

To realise the UFS vision - that is, to be an excellent, equitable and innovative university, the university has adapted its academic courses and management structures, as well as student matters, sports, cultural and other activities in order to better function within the framework of a democratic, diverse university community.

Over the past few years, the university has also promoted academic entrepreneurship to meet the challenges of modern-day higher education in South Africa, thus fulfilling its role as the only residential university in the Free State and central region.
